Right, so, there was breaking news on the Red and Black website about a possible rape at a frat party that police were investigating. And, leave it to all the sympathetic folks on my campus to rush to HARSH JUDGMENT OF THE GIRL AND DEFEND THE SO-CALLED FRATERNITY WITH THE “SPOTLESS REPUTATION”!!
Ahem.
I hate people, I really do:
“The boys at Phi Gamma Delta have a reputation of being great guys. This girl apparently just blacked out at the party and woke up ashamed of her behavior:”
“This is so dumb. A girl claiming rape when A) she was so drunk she doesn’t even know what happened. B) she had bruises on her HIPS and KNEES? really? she probably fell down. and C)her friends lost track of her at about 10 p.m.? good friends she has. wow. so the idiot is claiming rape. Maybe next time she could try to be more mature and not drink to the point where she passes out/doesn’t know what happened or find some better friends that know where there friend is at and don’t “lose track of her” by 10 p.m. It is a crazy world out there and girls definitely need to be on guard where ever they go. BUT, I guarantee you that this fraternity is the LAST place to see anything like that occur”
“In the likely scenario that this girl was blackout drunk and her friends and others could testify that the victim was seen flirting with and kissing the soon-to-be accused, who is really to blame?
Since when did a lack of personal responsibility become acceptable? “
“It is amazing to me how a girl can practice no personal responsibility, black-out, and POSSIBLY hook up with a guy (she doesnt remember if she did or not.) Then wake up the next morning ashamed of her behavior and tarnish the reputation of an entire organization with a spotless record for good…”
“Number 1 tip for not getting “raped”: Don’t get so drunk that you lose your memory, especially when surrounded by people you do not know or trust.”
Folks, this is all from my FELLOW STUDENTS. This is what they think happens. Nice guys never rape anyone! Girls just get falling down drunk, hook up with said nice-guys, regret it, and then cry “rape” to save their reputation.
Actually, what happened was this girl woke up from being passed out with her panties missing and covered in bruises. She did what a sensible, responsible person would do and went to get checked out by a doctor, where they reported a possible rape. SHE HAS NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED! SHE HASN’T NAMED ANYONE, SHE HASN’T RECOUNTED ANY EVENTS, THIS IS NOT SOME FABRICATION, ITS A SIMPLE INVESTIGATION TO SEE IF THERE WAS FOUL-PLAY, AND IF THERE WAS, THEN THOSE RESPONSIBLE SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Number one way not to get raped: uhhh….umm….
Number one way to stop rape: Tell men to stop raping women. MEN RAPE WOMEN. MEN RAPE OTHER MEN. MEN RAPE.
MEN RAPE.
MEN RAPE.
Rape does not happen in vacuum. Someone does it. A man (a million times out of a million and one) rapes someone. Stop raping. It’s not that hard.
Tonight is TAKE BACK THE NIGHT! I urge all you UGAers to come out and rally with us. It’s going to be awesome.

[...] online version of its newspaper The Red and Black, people started posting about how this couldn’t possibly have happened because the guys at the frat were such “good guys.” Mmmm. [...]

Goodness. I think the rush to blame the girl despite the lack of evidence says a lot about society. None of them are good things. I can’t really imagine how you feel in the thick of it.

I should really stop going back through blogs & LiveJournals at random. Because that led me to this, which led me to:
“How many “rape” cases really involve a drunk person, who, in their state of intoxication, consents to sex or other behavior, and the next day has sparse memory of the incident so alleges rape? I’m sure this happens frequently on college campuses.”
I really don’t know what to say about this, because there aren’t enough virulent swear words in the English language.
